On July 9, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania Ambassador Andrius Krivas took the floor on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries during the Human Rights Council‘s Interactive dalogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association Mr Clément Nyaletsossi Voule.

On 7-10 July, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Vidmantas Purlys attends the 94th session of the Executive Council of the OPCW in The Hague. The most important item on the Council’s agenda – the first report of 8 April by the OPCW Investigation and Identification Team (IIT), which concluded that units of the Syrian Arab Air Force had used chemical weapons in Syria in March 2017.

On July 1 Lithuania commences the next presidency for the Baltic Sea States Council taking it over from Denmark. During its presidency, Lithuania will focus on sustainable development, particularly in the areas of green economy, ecological and maritime tourism, civil protection, fight against human trafficking for labour exploitation, as well as prevention of violence against children.

On 30 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius attended the fourth Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region”, which was co-chaired by the European Union and the United Nations. The event was held in a virtual format. L. Linkevičius voiced his consistent support for Syria, activities of the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen, as well as stressed the need to support young people in the country and to ensure accountability for crimes committed in Syria.

On 23 June, the Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Raimonda Murmokaitė took part in the Extraordinary Virtual Ministerial Pledging Conference on UNRWA hosted by the governments of Sweden and Jordan. The event in support of Palestine refugees and UNRWA was co-chaired by Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation and the Foreign Minister of Jordan. The conference aimed to ensure that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) bridged the financial gap and received sufficient resources to continue delivering on its mandate.

On 16 June, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Albinas Zananavičius took part in a video conference of the EU Ministers of European Affairs and discussed the next multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2021-2027, as well as the EUR 750 billion recovery plan in order to prepare for the video conference of the members of the European Council and their orientation debate on 19 June.

On 12 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius took part in the first meeting of the International Coalition for the Sahel and stressed the need for the international community to coordinate its efforts more actively for  strengthening security and stability in the region.

On 15 June, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Baltic states and Poland took part in a video conference of the EU Foreign Affairs Ministers, and expressed their common position on the EU-U.S. cooperation, as well as stressed the importance of transatlantic relations in addressing international policy issues.

On 15 June in Vilnius, at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, the Foreign Ministers of the Baltic states and Poland met to discuss mutual cooperation and actions to further ease restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting will focus on cooperation and coordination of actions to further ease restrictions related to COVID-19, and on the inclusion of Poland into the Baltic free travel bubble.
