Political Director Asta Skaisgirytė addresses Human Rights Council in Geneva

On 27 February, the Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė attended the High-Level segment of the 40th session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva. She reaffirmed Lithuania’s commitment to human rights and expressed strong support for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and her mandate.

For the first time, Lithuania has announced its candidature to the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024. The country attaches a particular priority to gender equality, the rights of women and girls, journalists’ safety and protection of human rights defenders, the rights of the child, the rights of persons with disabilities, freedom of expression, as well as the right to freedom of assembly and association.

The Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė drew the international community’s  attention to the persecution of members of the LGBTI community in Chechnya, human rights violations and abuses in Russian-controlled territories of Ukraine and Georgia, and denied access to international human rights monitoring mechanisms.

The Human Rights Council, which is based in Geneva, was established in 2006 by the UN General Assembly. It comprises 47 elected member states. Lithuania has an observer status in the Human Rights Council.
