Lithuanian passport and ID card

General requirements

The application for Lithuanian passport and ID card may be placed only by Lithuanian citizen in person. The application for a child under 2 may be placed by one of the parents without the participation of the child.

Every applicant has to make an appointment during consular admission hours. Please make plans for the collection of the passport/ID card before the application (information at the bottom).

A child under 16 has to be accompanied by a parent with the valid passport. If parents are divorced, the court order which determines the child’s residency with that particular parent or consent letter of that parent has to be presented. If the application is for the renewal of the Lithuanian passport/ID card, a child over 16 may apply and collect the new passport/ID card alone.

The renewal of the lost/stolen passport/ID card and the issuance of the first passport/ID card will take about 2 months. The renewal of a passport issued after 2003 or any ID card will take up to 1 month.

Lithuanian ID card is accepted in the European Union and several other countries as a valid travel/identity document. ID card is issued with the chip inside and together with the sealed passcode which allow Lithuanians over 14 to connect to Lithuanian E-Government Gateway, using electronic signature, and to obtain constantly expanding government/administrative services online.

Lithuanian passport/ID card is valid 10 years for people over 16, 5 years for children over 5 and under 16 and 2 years for children under 5.

The list of the requirements for the first passport/ID card (the citizenship was reinstated):

  • Valid South African passport.
  • In some instances - the original decision of the Migration Department on the reinstatement of Lithuanian citizenship (Usually, within 2-3 weeks after the citizenship was reinstated).
  • Consular fee.

The list of the requirements for the first passport/ID card (for a child born to a Lithuanian citizen)

  • Valid South African passport.
  • Valid passport of the parent.
  • If the birth of the child was not registered in Lithuania- the application for the registration of birth. For children, born before 1 April 2011, email the embassy for detailed instructions.
  • 2 passport photos of a child (for children under 2 years old)
  • Consular fee.

  • Old passport or ID card (whichever is renewed or the only one which was issued before).

The list of the requirements for the renewal of a lost/stolen passport/ID card (personal information does not change):

  • The notification, signed at the embassy.
  • Lithuanian passport or ID card (whichever is not lost/stolen); if both lost/stolen- South African passport.
  • Consular fee.

Your options for new passport/ID card collection

Collection at the Embassy

You will receive an email after your passport/ID card are ready for collection. You must register for collection here Consul Information Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania (urm.lt)

Passport and/or ID card can be collected at the embassy by:

  • The applicant (you need to present your current LT passport or ID card, if it is still valid. If it is your first LT document – your valid SA passport);
  • A person whom applicant designated to collect their passport/ID at the time of application (with valid LT or SA passport);
  • A person with valid power of attorney certified by Lithuanian  notary;

Another legal representative (according to the laws of the Republic of Lithuania).

One of the parents or guardians has to collect a passport/ID card of a citizen under the age of 16, must have their valid LT passport or ID and ones of the child (if they are still valid).

Citizens between 16 and 18 y.o. can collect their passport/ID card themselves or by one of the parents, guardians upon presentation of their and the applicant’s LT passport or identity card (if it is valid). If it is their first LT document – valid SA passport.

If a citizen does not collect their passport/ID card within one year from the date of issuance of the document, this document is invalidated and destroyed according to the procedures in place.

Certificates collection

Certificates (person's electronic identification certificate and a qualified certificate of electronic signature), which are issued to persons from the age of 14 with an ID card are released only upon personal arrival or by courier.

Representatives (parents, guardians) or other authorized persons may not receive the above certificates.

Collection by courier

Passport/ID card can collected by sending a courier and paying all the costs associated with this method of collection. Only one document per shipment. It is imperative to state this in writing at the time of the application.

All courier shipments must be insured by at least 100 EUR and proof provided.

Two separate courier envelopes are required (each insured at least 100 EUR) to courier an ID with certificates to a person over 14 y.o. One of them will contain an ID card, the other - certificates of electronic identification. If certificates are not required for the ID card, one insured envelope is sufficient.

Upon receiving passport, ID card, certificates of electronic identification by courier, it is mandatory to fill in enclosed form, scan or take a picture of the form and e-mail it to the embassy (e-mail address is on the form) within 5 days of receiving the documents. This notification can also be sent to the Embassy by courier.

The passport, ID card or certificates of electronic identification will be activated and will become valid only after Embassy receives filled-in form.
