Important information regarding legalization of documents

From January 20, 2025, the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Republic of South Africa, the Republic of Angola, the Republic of Botswana, the Republic of Mozambique and the Republic of Namibia (hereinafter referred to as the Embassy in South Africa) will accept legalized documents issued in South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia, as well as other foreign countries, in accordance with the following principles and criteria:

  1. The Embassy in South Africa will accept legalized documents issued by the countries in which the Embassy resides (South Africa) and is accredited (Angola, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia) and legalized by the competent authorities of these countries;
  2. The Embassy in South Africa also accepts legalized documents issued by countries to which the Embassy in South Africa is not accredited and with which the Republic of Lithuania has established diplomatic relations (https://www.urm.lt/en/foreign-policy/lithuania-in-the-region-and-the-world/bilateral-cooperation/1030), if they meet the following criteria:

- the foreign citizen submitting the document is legally resident in South Africa (at least 6 months) and in the countries of accreditation of the Embassy in South Africa;

- the foreign citizen personally submits documents for himself or his family members (husband, wife, parents, children and adopted children);

- the submitted document has been additionally legalized by the diplomatic mission of the country that issued the document, which operates in the Republic of South Africa.

  1. If the documents submitted to the Embassy in South Africa do not meet the above criteria, they will not be accepted. Such documents must be submitted for legalization directly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, in accordance with the procedure established by it – https://keliauk.urm.lt/en/consular-services/legalisation or to diplomatic missions of the Republic of Lithuania, where these criteria would be met.
  2. A foreign citizen submitting documents must register in advance for a visit to the Embassy in South Africa by e-mail kons.za@urm.lt and only after receiving positive confirmation may he come to the Embassy in South Africa;
  3. During one visit, up to 5 personal documents or up to 3 documents of other persons can be submitted.
