South Africa recognized Lithuania de jure on 28 August 1991.

Diplomatic relations were established on 20 November 1991.

In 1998, Romas J. Misiūnas was appointed as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to South Africa (resided in Israel).

From 1992 to 1995 Cornelia Margareth Swart was appointed as the first Ambassador of South Africa to Lithuania (resided in Finland).
