Civil Registration

Civil registry - an official registration of an act or event that determines a person's legal status, resulting in the creation, change, or termination of that person's rights and obligations (Birth, marriage, divorce, death). Lithuanian citizens have a legal obligation to register their civil acts that were made abroad.

Child’s birth registration

If a child is born to a Lithuanian citizen abroad, the registration of the birth of the child is a prerequisite for the application for the first passport/ID card. Note: if a minor was born before you reinstated Lithuanian citizenship, but the child did not reinstate Lithuanian citizenship, the registration is mandatory as well.

List of the documents to register a child:

  • Application form filled in Lithuanian.
  • Unabridged child’s birth certificate legalized with Apostille and translated into Lithuanian language.
  • Valid passports of both parents (at least one of the passports must be Lithuanian).
  • Valid South African passport of the child.

Marriage registration

If your marriage has been registered abroad (not in Lithuania), you have to register it to Lithuanian registry as well.

List of the documents to register a marriage:

  • Application form filled in Lithuanian.
  • Unabridged marriage certificate legalized with Apostille and translated into Lithuanian.
  • If your marriage certificate does not state that your surname was changed due to marriage and it was in fact changed, a following application form, filled in Lithuanian.
  • Valid passports of both spouses.

Divorce registration

List of the documents to register a divorce:

  • Application form filled in Lithuanian.
  • Unabridged death certificate. There is no need to legalize it with apostille.
  • Valid passport of the person submitting the application.

*In case of divorce or if not the first marriage for either of the spouse, a divorce decree or death certificate of a previous spouse legalized with Apostille and translated into Lithuanian.

Death registration

List of the documents to register death:

  • Application form filled in Lithuanian.
  • Divorce decree issued by the High Court, legalized with Apostille and translated into Lithuanian.
  • Valid passports of both spouses.

Apostilization and Translation requirements:

  • Every document, which was not issued in Lithuania, except a passport, must be legalized with the Apostille.
  • Every document, except a passport and an Apostille, which was not issued in Lithuanian must be translated into Lithuanian language.
  • Please note that the Embassy does not provide translation services!
  • The acceptable translation has to be precise and has to be performed by any professional translators, i.e. in many cases certified or otherwise authorized by the certifying authorities of their countries.
  • The translation typically includes a certifying statement, signed and/or stamped by the translator that declares the translation to be an accurate translation.
