Registration of Vital Events Occurring Abroad in Lithuania

The Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Republic of South Africa can accept and forward applications from Lithuanian citizens to the Vilnius City Civil Registry Office for the registration of vital events (such as births, marriages, divorces, or deaths) that took place abroad, when submitted in person at the diplomatic mission.

Consular fee: A fee of 50 EUR applies to the acceptance and forwarding of documents for registering vital events registered abroad.

Lithuanian citizens may also submit applications directly to any civil registry office in Lithuania via registered mail, courier, or online through the State Enterprise Centre of Registers (Registrų centras) self-service portal.

Before submitting your application to a chosen civil registry office, we recommend contacting them by phone or email (contact information for civil registry offices can be found on the respective municipal websites).

Important: Applications to register vital events registered abroad must be submitted to the embassy in person. Documents sent by mail or courier will not be accepted at the embassy.

Registration of Vital Events at Diplomatic Missions of the Republic of Lithuania

Diplomatic missions only register vital events that have not yet been registered by the relevant authorities of a foreign state. If documents confirming vital events have already been issued by foreign authorities, Lithuanian citizens must apply to civil registry offices or diplomatic missions to have these vital events registered (recorded) in Lithuania.
