In case of emergency

In case of emergency

What to do if you become a victim of a crime

If you are a victim of theft, robbery, or violence against you or your family in the Republic of South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, or Lesotho, immediately contact the nearest police station or the emergency number 112, and get in touch with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in South Africa by phone at +270127609000 or by email at kons.za@urm.lt.

What to do if you lose a personal document

  • If you lose your personal identity card or a Lithuanian passport abroad, contact the nearest police station to obtain a certificate about the lost document. You should also contact the embassy in Pretoria to inform them of the loss.
  • A citizen who has lost a document confirming their identity and citizenship must fill out a notification about the loss of the document and submit it in person to the embassy in Pretoria.

Important! Once a personal document has been declared invalid, there is no possibility of changing its status or using the document again.

Temporary Documents

  • If you lose a personal document, you can apply to the embassy for the issuance of a Certificate of Return or a Temporary Passport. Alternatively, if your place of residence is declared in a foreign country (not in Lithuania), you may apply for the issuance of a personal identity card or passport. If you are unsure which document you need, contact the embassy in Pretoria by email at kons.za@urm.lt.
  • If you are in a country where there is no Lithuanian diplomatic or consular mission, you can apply to the embassy of any European Union member state for the issuance of a temporary travel document (Emergency Travel Document).

What to do in case of injury or illness

In the event of an accident in which you are injured or become ill while traveling, immediately contact a medical facility to receive qualified medical assistance.

If you are unsure how to proceed after an injury, illness, or extended hospitalization abroad, call your insurance company's assistance company at the phone numbers provided on your insurance policy or its appendices, or contact your insurance company directly.

When you arrive at the medical facility, present your valid insurance policy. After you do so, the medical facility will contact the insurance company.

If you have the means, you can pay the medical bill yourself. Upon returning to Lithuania, you are entitled to apply to your insurance company for reimbursement of your expenses. Note that expenses will only be reimbursed upon presentation of documents from the medical facility confirming the fact of your visit and payment.

Emergency Phone Numbers

  • General emergency number: 112 (when calling from a mobile phone) or 10111 (when calling from a landline).

What to Do in Case of Death Abroad

If a Lithuanian citizen dies (or is killed) abroad and had life insurance that includes repatriation coverage, the insurance company will handle the repatriation of the remains to Lithuania. They will also take care of all the necessary formalities and prepare the required documents. It is essential to contact the insurance company as soon as the death is confirmed.

If a Lithuanian citizen who died (or was killed) abroad did not have insurance, their family must arrange for the repatriation of the remains and cover all related costs. This can be done by contracting a funeral service company to repatriate the remains and authorizing the company to retrieve the remains and necessary documents.
