Botswana Marks 60 Years of Independence: President Presents Government Priorities to the Diplomatic Corps
On 3 March 2026 in Gaborone, the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania, Rasa Jankauskaitė, participated in a meeting between the President of the Republic of Botswana, Duma Gideon Boko, and the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Botswana. The event was organized in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Botswana’s independence. This was President D. G. Boko’s first official meeting with the diplomatic corps since the beginning of his term.
During the meeting, the President outlined the new Government’s foreign policy priorities, economic diplomacy agenda, and investment attraction plans in line with the national strategy Vision 2036. He emphasized that Botswana’s foreign policy will continue to be guided by multilateralism, respect for international law, and active strengthening of economic partnerships. The President also highlighted the need to accelerate economic diversification, enhance value chain development in the mineral resources sector, develop energy infrastructure, promote digital transformation, and create a favorable and competitive environment for foreign investment.
The event also included a political dialogue between the diplomatic corps and the Vice President of Botswana, as well as ministers responsible for international relations, health, mineral resources and energy, and communications and innovation. The discussions focused on the new Government’s reforms and the potential role of international partners in their implementation.
Ambassador R. Jankauskaitė noted that Lithuania values Botswana as a stable and reliable partner in the Southern African region. According to the Ambassador, Lithuania sees significant potential to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the areas of digitalization, green energy, and high technology, as well as to promote business ties and investment.
