New amendments to the Law on Citizenship
The new amendments to the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania entered into force on 6 July. Citizenship could be restored at the presentation of necessary documents by persons and descendants of persons who held citizenship before 15 June 1940 and emigrated from Lithuania before 11 March 1990.
The adopted amendments clarify one of the key concepts of the Law. Article 2.3 of the Law is amended as follows: Persons who left Lithuania before 11 March 1990 are persons or descendants of persons who held the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania prior to 15 June 1940 and left Lithuania before 11 March 1990 for permeant residence abroad when on 11 March 1990 the place of their permanent residence was outside Lithuania. This concept does not include persons who emigrated from Lithuania to the former Soviet Union.
The amendments also clarify Articles 7.2 and 7.3, stipulating that a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania can also hold citizenship of another country if at least one of the listed conditions is satisfied. This is applicable to persons who were deported from the occupied Republic of Lithuania or left Lithuania before 11 March 1990.
