The Flame of Freedom in the Embassy Windows – Honoring the Heroes of 13 January

On the morning of 13 January, the Embassy of Lithuania joined the initiative “The Flame of Freedom—from Generation to Generation” by lighting a flame of remembrance and freedom. Today, we commemorate the 35th anniversary of the tragic events of 13 January 1991.

35 years ago, thousands of unarmed Lithuanians peacefully confronted Soviet tanks to defend their country’s freedom. That night, 14 people were killed and around 700 were injured, yet the will of the people remained unbroken, serving as proof that unity and courage are stronger than violence.

Over the past 35 years, Lithuania has become a free, democratic, and progressive country, shaped by the responsibility and active engagement of its citizens. The courage of the Defenders of Freedom continues to inspire—a living flame that reminds us that freedom is never guaranteed and must be constantly cherished and defended.

The courage of the Defenders of Freedom continues to inspire—a living flame reminding us that freedom is never guaranteed and must always be protected. Freedom endures only when we safeguard it and pass it on to future generations—the flame of freedom, from generation to generation.”
