The Embassy of Lithuania in South Africa, in collaboration with the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre, presented an exhibition dedicated to commemorating the centennial of the Vilnius YIVO Institute and its crucial role in the interwar Jewish world.
The exhibition in Cape Town was presented by Dr. Larisa Lempertienė, head of the Judaica Research Centre at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and a renowned expert in this field.
Dr. L. Lempertienė provided visitors in Cape Town with an exceptional opportunity to thoroughly acquaint themselves with the rich Jewish heritage of Vilnius and the history of YIVO itself.
Founded in Vilnius in 1925, YIVO (the Yiddish Scientific Institute) became an irreplaceable symbol of the intellectual life and cultural heritage of the city famously known as the “Jerusalem of the North.”
