Since January 1, 2017, traditional paper birth, marriage, divorce, death, and name/surname change certificates are no longer issued. Instead, Lithuanian citizens can apply for and receive extracts certifying vital record entries.
- Eligibility: Marriage, divorce, and name change extracts are issued to the person concerned or their representative. Birth extracts are issued to persons aged 16 and older, as well as their parents/adoptive parents regardless of age. Deceased persons' extracts are issued to surviving spouses, close relatives, and statutory/testamentary heirs.
- Submission methods: In person, via an authorized representative, by mail, or by courier.
Required Documents:
- Application to issue an extract certifying a vital record entry at the diplomatic mission. DOWNLOAD
- Valid personal identification document (Lithuanian passport or ID card).
- If applying by registered mail or courier: A copy of the identity document certified by an issuing authority, notary, consular officer, or other competent foreign official.
- Consular fee: 20 EUR.
Collection and Intermediary Services
- Extracts can be picked up in person by the applicant with an ID or mailed by registered mail (the client must arrange and pay for courier services).
- Alternative: You can apply directly to any civil registry office in Lithuania (in person, by mail/courier, or via the Population Register and Declaration Information System).
- Intermediary service: If you need an extract issued by the Vilnius City Civil Registry Office and wish to receive it through the embassy, the embassy provides a document retrieval service. The consular fee for mediation is 40 EUR (if ordered through the embassy, an Apostille can also be requested for an additional 30 EUR).
Important Notes:
- Documents issued in Lithuania must generally be authenticated with an Apostille before submission to foreign authorities, unless exempted.
- Documents issued in Lithuania and Apostilled must be translated into English unless the receiving foreign institution specifies otherwise.
- Issued extracts do not indicate an expiration date, as validity is determined by the laws of the foreign state where you submit them.
