Lithuanian Ambassador Rasa Jankauskaitė attended the 35th Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Namibia and the Inauguration Ceremony of the newly elected President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the State House in Windhoek.
The ceremony was attended by African leaders, delegations from international organisations and high-level representatives from foreign countries. The ceremony marked a historic moment as for the first time a woman has become Head of State of the country.
In her inaugural speech, she stressed the importance of the support of the international community in the struggle for Namibia's independence and thanked all those present for their solidarity: "Your presence here today is highly appreciated, it is a source of inspiration and a moral boaster to me and Namibians at large“. The President also called for unity in the country's economic and social development, stressing the importance of women's leadership.
"A people united striving to achieve a common good for all members of society will always emerge victory. I implore every citizen, regardless of background or political affiliation, to join on journey of nation-building. Let us move in unison under the banner of One Namibia, One Nation to build a prosperous future for ourselves, our children and generations to come," said President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Namibia declared independence on 21 March 1990.
