Public Lecture at Stellenbosch University: Information Security & Disinformation
On 19 February, Stellenbosch University, in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania and the UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Competence, hosted a special guest lecture titled “Information Security, Disinformation: A Threat to Global Peace?”.
The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Margarita Šešelgytė, Director of the Institute of International Relations and Political Science at Vilnius University (Lithuania). She emphasized that without strong information security, there can be no real security, as modern threats exploit digital networks, artificial intelligence, and automated tools to spread disinformation. She shared Lithuania’s experience and expertise in EU foreign and security policy, exploring the growing global threat of disinformation and its impact on democratic institutions, societal trust, and international stability.
The lecture offered participants valuable insights into the intersection of information security, geopolitics, and contemporary security challenges. It also underscored the importance of international academic collaboration and Lithuania’s commitment to sharing knowledge and experience with global partners.
